Notice Information, Getting Married in Australia PDF Print E-mail

A Notice of Intended Marriage Form [NIM] needs to be lodged with the Marriage Celebrant of your choice for a minimum of one month and one day before a marriage can take place, but is valid for 18 months from the date of Lodgement.  Arrangements should be made within that time to get married otherwise the form becomes void.

The Registrar's certified copy of each party's Birth Certificate [if born in Australia] needs to be produced and any Change of Name Certificate, together with evidence of the termination of a previous marriage if any - for example, Death Certificate, in the event of a Death or Divorce Decree Absolute in the event of a Divorce.  If born outside of Australia, a current Passport may be used for proof of Birth but only if a Birth Certificate cannot be obtained.

  • Note: All Certificates must be Originals or Certified Copies - NOT Photocopies.
  • Athough one month and one day is the legal requirement for Lodgement of the NIM before a marriage can take place, most celebrants appreciate more notice so they can plan their own lives in conjunction with weddings.
  • If it is not possible for both parties to the marriage to sign the NIM before lodgement, either Bride or Groom can lodge the form and the second party can sign at a later date.
  • If Interstate or in a Remote area, signatures can be witnessed by any person denoted on the back of the NIM and then faxed to the celebrant if time is short  The original can then be sent by mail.
